Very few collectors pay much attention to the one, two or three letters found on NEHU rings. It is most probably disregard as just part of another alphanumerical numbering system. Nothing could be further from the truth, as this letter or letters indicate the different federations within the Union.

Prior to the use of plastic coated rings, rolled end aluminum rings with embossed letters were issued – typical to the period. One anodized aluminum ring with engraved letters, similar to a fancy pigeon ring, turned up so far – a blue ring with NEHU 64 S engraved onto it. The engraving is filled with white paint. Modern day NEHU rings are typical racing homer rings – clear plastic over aluminum inside with a coloured paper insert in between; or coloured plastic coating and a white paper insert. Sometimes it is rather difficult to distinguish which system was used. Prior and up to 1983 they used a different supplier, or the rings were made with different tooling. In 2002 they switched back to the pre-84 supplier/tooling again. This is evident from the difference in appearance of the plastic coatings on the rings.

I will now list all the different NEHU initials together with the federations’ names. I will also write down the years observed so far in my collection. As always, I am asking group members to let us know if you have other years. The NEHU used two digit years up until 1990. 1991 and 1992 seams to be the change over years during which some federations had two digit and others 4 digit dates. I have yet so see a 1993 or later dated NEHU ring with the year printed in two digits.
