Racing in 2006 Update see: http://www.pigeonbasics.com/news/news256.html

RPRA One Loft Race
Entries have been coming in thick and fast for the RPRA One Loft Race and there are only a couple of hundred places left as we go to press so if you are thinking of applying please do not hesitate in reserving your place. If you are in Ireland, north or south then John Miller is willing to help get your pigeon to Tewkesbury. Please call either Karen or myself and we will furnish you with his contact details. The BBC West television programme ‘Inside Out’ should now show the article on the 2005 One Loft Race on 27th February.

Jim and Sandra Dyer – thank you
Jim and Sandra attended the Show of the Year this year as judges and were mighty pleased and privileged to be selected. They did a great job on Class 11 as the pigeon went on to win Best in Show! In their ‘thank you’ card to me they included the following thoughts which I thought were so nice I wanted to share them with you. “Echo Thoughts – Each to his path. By many ways God guides all pilgrims’ feet and somewhere in his Kingdom there’s a place where all roads meet at Blackpool. Every year”.

Breeder/Buyer Sales
I have been asked by a couple of organisations about the status of Breeder/Buyer sales under the DEFRA restrictions. If you have the pigeons in a central location for purchasing then you must follow the conditions of the General Licence appertaining to sales. The same then goes fro the organisation of the race and what is fundamentally important is that you apply in good time to your Region Secretary for an open race licence. The conditions then for the sale element are:
The following licence conditions will apply to bird gatherings including sales;
A nominated person must be designated as the event organiser and a person responsible for keeping the records set out in below.
  1. A record of all attendees must be kept for three months, which includes the following information:
    • full name;
    • home address;
    • telephone number;
    • number and types of birds.
  2. A named veterinary surgeon (or another veterinary surgeon if the named person is unavailable) must be contactable for advice and to attend in the event of any suspect disease.
  3. Biosecurity advice must be distributed at the event.
  4. If sales of birds are taking place at the event, a record of all sales must be kept by the event organiser for at least three months. This must include the name, address and telephone number of both the seller and the buyer, and any identifying features or individual identification of the purchased bird(s).
To notify the local State Veterinary Service Animal Health Office nearest to the event at least 14 days prior to the event taking place. Notification must include date, location, details of the event organiser and anticipated numbers and types of birds.

Buyers must isolate the purchased bird(s) from any other birds (except those purchased at the same event) for at least one week. Any signs of ill health observed in the purchased bird(s) during this period must be reported to a veterinary surgeon and such birds must not be mixed with any other birds until the presence of an avian notifiable disease has been ruled out.

Contact your local State Veterinary Service (SVS) Animal Health Office (AHO) and Local Authority for further advice on biosecurity measures and any other legislation that may apply.

To notify the local State Veterinary Service Animal Health Office nearest to the event at least 14 days prior to the event taking place. Notification must include date, location, details of the event organiser and anticipated numbers and types of birds.

Without trying to simplify the procedure, organisers of breeder/buyer sales may find it easier to ‘sell’ the pigeons on pedigree alone and that would save all the hassle of formally having a licenced sale.

Disaster in Poland
If, like me, you were shocked at the building collapse at the pigeon show in Poland I know that you will want to think of the families and foreign friends of loved ones who lost their lives there. As news filters in of the dead I understand that some trade stand holders that were at Blackpool only the weekend before have been injured or sadly lost their lives. I have sent a letter of condolence to the Polish Federation President.
