BICC - Tours 2004...

The Tours birds were in good competition on this weekend but did not take centre stage because the Pau International was also on the same weekend and therefore some fanciers would be splitting their teams. However these were a different bird competing for the honour of 1st BICC National Tours against some strong competition and all National races take some winning based on members sending their very best for these prestige’s and very competitive races. This race saw Alec Mackenzie & Daughters come good once again with the same pigeon that won the section a few weeks earlier. Alec has stuck to more or less the same line of pigeons for many years and they are from the Meulaman VDB from Albert Babbington with the Kellons also bred in these lofts and just as successful both crossed and pure. This week’s winner has always been consistent and Alec said that he can always rely on him as he has quite a few prizes both minor and top quality. Alec has a strong team of 30 w/h cocks on the go with the addition of 10 hens that are more than adequate for the races that Alec wants to compete in. There are a few more in the stock team, maybe a fem more than many would keep but when you are trying pigeons and they are quality then they have to be given time to prove their value. I first heard of Alec many years ago and have always looked for his results in the Essex area and know that he is no stranger to winning. Alec is one of those fanciers who doe’s not generally have a lot to say so unless you are near to him and can spend some time then as a scribe you are limited to information. Brian & Cornelia Long had a good race clocking 10 in the first 30 of the open starting with 2nd 7th 11th 13th 20th 21st 22nd 26th 29th 30th plus a few more. Their winner is a consistent blue chequer 3y cock raced on the w/h and is bred from the De Klak stock when crossed with a hen from their good friend Bruce McAllister. This was a close race and he was only a few seconds behind the winner, having said that Brian did say that when they were preparing for this race the birds were better than they had been all season. The sire is “Jemmy” a top class direct De Klak stock cock from Jos Van Limpet, the originals were purchased in 1985 and have bred winners ever since. The dam was bred by friend Bruce and has bred several good pigeons with a brother breeding a section winner. Feed is based on different mixes with the addition of fats including sunflower seed. Brian was saying that Cornelia did all the hard work building up to the race while he was away with work, in fact Brian was only in the house for 30mins before taking the pigeons down to the club. As you can see from the positions the pigeons came very well with plenty in the clock.

This is a very competitive club so the winning positions are all hard fought and once again we see the very good partnership of Dave Heywood & Son amongst the winners. I have written about the partnership on a few occasions but they appear to have gone quiet on me with this race. Perhaps they along with Mr Simmons can supply info for a future article.

There is one partnership who are very often found amongst the winners, they are John & Darren May who win 1st Centre section. This again is a loft that I have also reported on previously for the club as they like Alec are generally found around the winner’s enclosure. It is always nice to see your pigeons winning for others and the weekend of this race was a good one because their pigeons had good results for other fanciers, winners reported either bred by them or from their stock. These include Ken Cormley winning 2nd fed 2nd Combine. George Dieghton also 2nd fed 2nd Combine with one bred by John & Darren. John Willis also won on the same weekend in his local competition so it is pleasing for the partnership when they see others winning with their birds. Their section winner is a Janssen/Van Loon ylg chequer cock whose sire is a direct Van Loon with the dam being Belgium rung and bred from direct Janssen stock. John has been in the sport since he was just about 10yrs so knows how hard competition is so likes to get the best birds available, the results have been coming for many years so he is on the right track and this is rubbing off on son Darren who has a great future in the sport. They have an excellent race team that have won in all types of competition and to achieve their goal they have a team made up of w/h cocks that have to earn their perch, they also race a few hens on the roundabout. They start the year by being paired in January when they are allowed to sit their first nest of eggs until they are nearly due to chip out, they are then taken away and the system starts. They like many more of the specialist lofts John & Darren do use the club/federation as a training facility for the Classic and National races. I was asked about why some fancier do this type of thing, as I have said to then some fanciers do not have to club race but still support the local facilities through this system. Anyway first of all they do train their birds to the 30ml stage and then into those three inland races.

Mr & Mrs Cowper & Son are 6th open with a blue chequer pied Hen whose sire is a direct Flor Veroort blue bred from Het Rikske son of “Champion Goede Blawn” being “Champion Fieneke 3000” 1st Orleans 101944 birds, 1st Bourges 7765 birds. 2nd Nat 38152 birds. 1st Vierzon 13700 birds. 1st Vierzon 4474 birds. “Fieneke 5000” Won 21st sold for £60,000 after Flor died in 2001. On the dam’s side the Franz Werner Revermann pigeons are used with the dam being a blue cheque bred by Louella from their Flor Vevoort “Broken Wing” done as a Baby. We decided to change direction and look for other pigeons and purchased 18 young birds from Louella in 1998. This proved to be an excellent decision because they have flown well winning 30 x 1sts in club and Fed. As with anything that goes right additions are always made and more direct Birds purchased in 2001. The blue chequer clocked in this race is raced as a widow hen and she has had two inland races then sent to BICC Gellainville where she was beaten by her brother and sister who came in with 73rd & 106th open. She was then sent to tours where she came off the river Thames out of Essex her brother and sister where close behind her.

The partnership of John & Jacqui Legge have once again won the 1st West section with another from their good “Maverick” lines that are really getting to grips with the specialist races. This winner is a dark chequer w/h hen bred from “Maverick Mission” who was 1st section 4th open BBC Bordeaux and in turn bred from top racer and breeder “Maverick”. When someone is consistently in the prizes it becomes hard to find further things to add. However during any conversation there is always something that comes up and on this occasion it was the feed. John pointed out that he does like to feed plenty of protein because the birds are more often than not flying against the odds into a head wind with their lofts being well to the west in the BICC. This system has worked well for the partnership and next year they are hoping that the winds will move nearer to their direction and even the odds.
